The Good Ol’ Oscars

My immediate reaction to last night’s Oscars is that it was, in many ways, a conscious rebuttal to this year’s Golden Globes.  The Globes became an outright celebration of women’s progress, work, and power in Hollywood.  The Oscars, on the other hand, felt like a conscious attempt to hold on to the Hollywood that consists … Continue reading »

Worth Watching: Sunday Oct. 7

On Friday, I briefly highlighted the reasons why I’m doing this series and why it’s so important to be thoughtful and critical about the media we watch.  As I mention in that post, it’s very important to have a diverse group of characters on TV.  But just to have them present on the screen isn’t … Continue reading »

Worth Watching: Friday Oct. 5

Yes, it’s incredibly important to have a greater diversity of characters on TV. But it’s just as important that every LGBT character doesn’t act like Louis from Partners or Jack from Will and Grace. That every female character doesn’t act like the Desperate Housewives or a character from Gossip Girl. And that those characters actually get to speak and be central to the stories they’re in; not just be part of a colorful backdrop so that a show about a white man can say, “Look how diverse we are!” Continue reading »

Definite Watch

Last Resort (ABC 8pm) – I was pleasantly surprised by the way the very first episode of this show explored the challenges of being a female officer on a submarine dominated by men. And rather than implying that the female officer needs to just “grow some balls” and learn to be one of the guys when they sexually harass her or disrespect her gender, the show made clear that it was the behavior of the men that needed to change.

Worth Watching: Wednesday Oct. 3

Tonight’s Worth Watching is going to be pretty brief. Because of the Presidential debate, there’s almost nothing new on tonight except for a couple sitcoms and reality shows. The one show that might be worth watching (aside from the debates, obviously) is Guys With Kids. But I’m still on the fence about this one. What … Continue reading »

Now that the fall season is in full swing, I want to do a quick highlight of the newer shows (either in their first or second seasons) on each night that I think are worth checking out.  My criteria include overall entertainment value as well as social justice issues (e.g., diversity in character representation, narrative … Continue reading »

Stop Writing And Talking Like Such A…

Everyone’s talking about how amazing women have performed at this Olympic games.  Basically, they’ve kicked ass.  But, back in the world that most of us live in, there’s still an incredible lack of respect for women and girl’s ability in sports…and in life. I am so tired of hearing language that implies being or acting … Continue reading »

A First Step: Integrating Social Justice and Entertainment

After a (relatively) brief hiatus, I’m back!  And I’m still passionate about bringing the issues of social justice to the forefront of entertainment and people’s consciousness.  But, I’m also passionate about being happy.  Sometimes when faced with all that is wrong with the world it’s easy to get angry, stay angry, and forget about our … Continue reading »
